Gay Marriage - Yes or No?

Another article is headed ‘Everyone wants to love and behold and bicker’ which I think is very pertinent. The article was interesting in that it states that ‘gay men are not normal. They’re neat (I wish). They also cook, and dance with style. Lesbians, too, are not normal in the way their straight sister are. They are much hotter – especially the tall blonde Swedish ones.’

The articles goes on to say that ‘as long as there deep abiding love, the institution of marriage remains sacred regardless of whether it is between a man and woman, a man and a man, or a woman and woman.’

I heard somewhere that if the heterosexuals have to get married why not gay & lesbians be inflicted with the same pain?
I’ve been with my partner for 11 years and I don’t think we will be rushing into a marriage ceremony. Neither of us is big on that but it doesn’t mean we don’t want the same equality in our society that our straight siblings have.

To me the recognition of same-sex marriage is really about recognising us as equals in society and being treated as equal to my straight siblings.

There’s been a lot of publicity about gay marriages occurring in New York this week and it’s good to see that gay and lesbians are getting married. Even as the celebrations have started there are still groups who are going to challenge the law in an attempt to nullify gay marriages.

Even though we may get the laws past and some recognition of being equal there are always going to be elements of the conservatives that will refuse to recognise same-sex marriage and actively attempt to undermine any recognition.

Remember where New York came from – a long way from the Stonewall uprising in 1969 – really the start of the modern gay movement. They only reached marriage equality in 2011.

Have we had our Stonewall? I don’t think we had a Stonewall to coalesce the GLBTI community but over a period of time we have worked hard as individuals and groups to move Australia to the recognition of same-sex marriage. There is a lot of noise around same-sex marriage at the moment and hopefully that noise will translate into action. However, I am not confident that the two dominant parties at the moment will acquiesce to this noise and give us our recognition. We still have some work to do and it is not fair to rely on organisations to do all the work. We need to support these organisations in working for us.

If you will, we’ve gone from the era of “The Boys in the Band” to the day of the boys (and girls) in the banns. You don’t have to be gay to appreciate the significance.
